Robin Morgan:
The "otherizing" of women is the oldest oppression known to our species, and it's the model, the template, for all other oppressions.

THEATRE UNBOUND LETS HER RIP
5th Annual 24-Hour Play Project Puts Female Theatre Artists Through Boot Camp

Theatre Unbound will hold its 5th Annual Benefit Gala and 24-Hour Play Project on Saturday, January 28, at In The Heart of The Beast's Avalon Theatre, 1500 East Lake Street in Minneapolis. In addition to the 24-Hour Plays - six new plays written, rehearsed and performed within 24 hours - the gala will feature food, drink, a live auction, and emceeing by local comedy divas Greta Grosch (Church Basement Ladies) and Ahna Brandvik (Tony and Tina's Wedding).

The Event: "The 24-Hour Play Project is one of my favorite programs, because it lets women theatre artists loose with a vengeance," says Theatre Unbound Artistic Director Stacey Poirier, "And this year, having Greta and Ahna at the mic is bound to pump it up just that much more."

The Process: Theatre Unbound was the first company to bring the 24-Hour play concept to the Twin Cities, in May 2001. Six teams of playwrights come together on the Friday night before the event. Each team must create a new script featuring women performers and including four elements: an emotion, a line of dialog, and an object. On Saturday morning, the scripts are turned over to directors and actors, who have a mere three hours of rehearsal to put the shows together in time for the evening's performance. Past participants have described the high-pressure process as "theatre boot camp" and "theatrical crack."

Admission: Tickets to the benefit are $25 (cash or check only). All proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction will benefit Theatre Unbound, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. For reservations or further information, call 612-721-1186 or visit www.theatreunbound.com. Doors will open at 7:00 PM, and performances of the 24-Hour Plays will begin at 8:00 PM.

The Artists: This year's directors include Unbound company member Delta Giordano, Wendy Resch Novak, and Katherine Horowitz (Theatre Pro Rata). Performers will include Karen Wiese-Thompson, Julie Weaver, Aamera Siddiqui, and Unbound company members Laura Wiebers and Stacey Poirier.

Theatre Unbound produces high quality, visionary theatre created by women - powerful stories that represent women in active pursuit of their goals and desires; female perspectives on universal struggles and achievements.
