Robin Morgan:
The "otherizing" of women is the oldest oppression known to our species, and it's the model, the template, for all other oppressions.

THEATRE UNBOUND CONVENES THE COURT OF WOMEN
Carolyn Gage's Anastasia Trials Gives Gals the Gavel

  • "Verdict - an unexpected delight" – Miami Herald
  • "Carolyn Gage's raucous, multilayered script explores issues of empathy, loyalty, and betrayal among women" – Washington Post
  • "Pure theatrical fun" – South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Theatre Unbound presents Carolyn Gage's interactive comedy, The Anastasia Trials in the Court of Women, March 16-31, 2007, and takes the experience beyond the stage with these special features:

  • March 17: Post-show question and answer session with playwright Carolyn Gage
  • March 17-18: "Acting Lesbian" theatre workshop by Carolyn Gage
  • All performances: Lobby displays on the Russian Revolution; the woman who claimed to be the Grand Duchess Anastasia; and women’s suffrage

The Anastasia Trials in the Court of Women runs March 16-31, 2007 at The Playwrights' Center in Minneapolis, 2301 Franklin Avenue East in Minneapolis (see show calendar below). Ticket prices are $16 (regular adult), $14 (student/senior), and $12 (groups of 8 or more; veterans and active military). Call 612-721-1186 for reservations or more information.

"It's a courtroom drama within a comedy about a struggling women's theatre company," says Unbound Artistic Director Stacey Poirier. "How could we resist? It also piqued our interest because it invites the women in the audience – and only the women – to vote on whether to overrule or sustain the lawyers' objections. Love the idea or hate it, everyone has something to say about it."

"This play can foster endless conversations," agrees Gage.

The Anastasia Trials in the Court of Women is directed by Rebecca Rizzio. The cast features Laura Coates (Fringe Encore at the Guthrie), Emma Gochberg (Fringe Encore at the Guthrie, Stella Adler Studio), Kirsten Kuchler (Hardcore Theater), Katherine Kupiecki (Starting Gate, Fringe Encore at the Guthrie), and Christine Winkler (Jeune Lune, Commonweal), joined by Unbound company members Stacey Poirier, Delta Rae Giordano, Noë Tallen, and Laura Wiebers – who bring their insider knowledge of women's theatre to their portrayal of "Emma Goldman Theatre Brigade" and its crisis-laden opening night.

Carolyn Gage is a Maine-based lesbian playwright whose work includes The Second Coming of Joan of Arc, Harriet Tubman Visits a Therapist, and Like There's No Tomorrow: Meditations for Women Leaving Patriarchy.
