Aphra's Attic: Plays by Early Women Playwrights

Theatre Unbound first cooked up the notion of anthologizing historical plays by women with Girl's Got Pluck in 2005. Now in its 10th season, the company offers up Aphra's Attic, unearthing a pair of little-known scripts. First is The Coach by Queen Margaret of Navarre, who applied quill to paper in the 16th century to tell the story of three young women engaged in a competition to determine which has the most appalling romantic life (and in those days, one can bet, things could get pretty rotten). The second work is Alice Gerstenberg's Overtones, from 1916, in which each character is portrayed by two actors—one tackling the character's public face, the other depicting her true inner life.
