Robin Morgan:
The "otherizing" of women is the oldest oppression known to our species, and it's the model, the template, for all other oppressions.

THEATRE UNBOUND SKEWERS ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON
Jekyll and Hyde meet Lucy and Ethel

(Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota) Theatre Unbound continues its 10th anniversary season at The Lowry Lab Theater, 350 St. Peter Street in downtown St. Paul, with Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll and Hyde Play, October 31-November 15, 2009.

"Playwright Lauren Wilson turns Stevenson's novella into a zany, door-slamming farce," says Unbound Artistic Director Stacey Poirier. "Not just Jekyll, but all the characters have something to hide. Well, except for little Penelope, who openly and honestly throws knives at people. When they all try to pretend that they aren't doing what they're doing, no end of chaos ensues."

Director Kim Hines notes that the play's comic deceptions resonate with current events. "Just as the mask of the friendly and knowledgeable Dr. Jekyll is peeked, leaders in power positions - bank executives, brokers - were recently revealed in a way that highlighted the true intent behind their actions." To underscore the parallels between the story and the current economic situation, and to pay homage to the age of classic horror films, Hines has chosen to set the play in the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Cast members of Chemical Imbalance include Edward Linder (TMJ Productions) as the notorious doctor turned madman, who spends much of the play chasing Rebecca Gebhart (Bloomington Civic Theatre) who plays twins - one good, one evil. Ellen Apel (MN Jewish Theatre) and Mame Pelletier (Portland Center Stage), play his socialite, status hungry mother and sister. Gail Fraser (Commonweal Theatre) is the withering wallflower love interest and Lacey Piotter (Flowershop Project) is the cross-dressing cousin/confidant. Rounding out the cast are Alex Carlson, Stephen Houtz, Joey Metzger, Stacey Poirier, and Caitlin Ray.
