Robin Morgan:
The "otherizing" of women is the oldest oppression known to our species, and it's the model, the template, for all other oppressions.

THEATRE UNBOUND DELIVERS LISA LOOMER'S
AWARD-WINNING PLAY: EXPECTING ISABEL

(Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota) Theatre Unbound continues its 10th anniversary season at The Lowry Lab Theater, 350 St. Peter Street in downtown St. Paul, with Expecting Isabel, February 13-28, 2010 (see calendar below).

In Expecting Isabel, Lisa Loomer, co-writer of 1999's Academy Award-winning film "Girl, Interrupted" starring Angelina Jolie and Wynona Ryder, maps out a divine comedy about one couple's epic attempt to reach parenthood. Childless and nearing 40, Miranda and Nick must navigate the ethnically rich (and hilarious) labyrinth of their oddball families and avoid being crushed between the Scylla of expectation and the Charybdis of disappointment as they thread their way through the modern fertility industry. Ultimately, they must learn something about themselves and about life in order to save their relationship from the inferno. Will they become mired in a childless purgatory? Or will they avert disaster and gain entry to that "paradise" known as parenthood?

Theatre Unbound company member Rebecca Rizzio directs the show. "This story is real. It is relevant," she says. "What excites me most, is that whether women want to have children or not, or do have children or not, this show will speak to them. One of the main themes in the play is that women need to find their self-worth from within."

"It asks hugely controversial questions," says Unbound Artistic Director Stacey Poirier. "How far am I willing to go to get a family? How far is too far? How do my decisions measure up to those of others? And, as one of the main characters asks, 'Can we only love what looks like us?'"

Cast members of Expecting Isabel include Christine Winkler Johnson (Commonweal Theatre) andEric Knutson (Jungle Theater) as Miranda and Nick - the "Desperately Seeking Child" couple. Unbound company members Delta Giordano and Noë Tallen, along with David Schlosser (Theatre in the Round), Nora Montanez (Minneapolis Musical Theatre) and Roneet Rahamim (Theatre Pro Rata) appear in multiple roles.

Expecting Isabel has won the 1998 Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays award and was nominated for the 1999 Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play.

This activity is funded, in part, by the Minnesota arts and cultural heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008. Theatre Unbound's 10th Anniversary Season is sponsored by Finnegans Irish Amber and Minnesota Women's Press.
