Robin Morgan:
The "otherizing" of women is the oldest oppression known to our species, and it's the model, the template, for all other oppressions.

THEATRE UNBOUND WHIPS UP A STORM
Carin Bratlie directs all-female cast
in Shakespeare's The Tempest

Theatre Unbound presents William Shakespeare's The Tempest, directed by Carin Bratlie with an all-female cast. The Tempest runs November 5-19, 2005 at The Playwrights' Center, 2301 Franklin Avenue East in Minneapolis (see show calendar below). Ticket prices are $14-16. Call 612-721-1186 for reservations or more information.

"Why should a theatre that does work by women produce a Shakespeare play?" asks Unbound Artistic Director Stacey Poirier. "Because Shakespeare is the best-known playwright in the English language, and from the very first, productions of his work have been all or mostly dominated by men. We're making up for lost time."

Director Carin Bratlie, whose recent Theatre Pro Rata production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead was described as "pitch perfect" in City Pages, finds that an all-female cast deepens her approach to the text. "We're not changing genders. The women will be playing male characters; the play is very specific that Prospero's island is an all-male island, with Miranda the only female. Yet each character has different levels of masculinity and femininity, and I think exploring this with a cast of women will yield some great new insights."

The Tempest features Muriel Bonertz (last seen at TU in My Sister In This House) as Prospero, Stacey Poirier as Caliban, and Lindsay Goss (director of Susan Glaspell's "Trifles" in Theatre Unbound's Girl's Got Pluck) as Ariel.
