REVIEW:

Tempest is a Winner
William Randall Beard
Minneapolis Star Tribune

The idea of a feminist theater presenting an all-female version of Shakespeare's "Tempest" might seem like just a gimmick, except that Theatre Unbound's production is in the service of a great concept. Director Carin Bratlie engineers a unique version of gender bending. The male characters are dressed in contemporary male attire, but make no effort to disguise the fact that they are women. Muriel J. Bonertz's Prospero blends masculine bravado with a maternal spirit that is at once riveting and disconcerting. The varying degrees of androgyny add layers of mystery to the play's rich magic.

The striking physical production is every bit as creative -- a simple series of white cloth drapes stretched, twisted and knotted into various configurations around the black-box space. Significantly cut, this is a lean, trim version of the play that will intrigue newcomers and offer veterans a new perspective.
