Call for Proposals: Title IX

Theatre Unbound seeks proposals from women playwrights in Minnesota for short scripts based on true stories about women in sports, for inclusion in our Fall 2015 production, Title IX.

As we envision it, Title IX will

  • be performed in school and community gymnasiums, with one performance at the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium at St. Catherine University.
  • include stories of both famous sports figures and women and girls in other walks of life.
  • explore the effect that participating in team sports can have on women’s relationship with their bodies and with other people.
  • examine the perception that creating opportunities for women necessitates denying opportunities to men.

From the proposals we receive, we will select six or seven writers to work with us on the project, under the supervision of director Wendy Resch Novak and dramaturg Anne Bertram. Writers must be able to commit to

  • attending three check-in meetings in Minneapolis between November 2014 and January 2015;
  • completing a script by February 2015;
  • participating in three script workshops in Minneapolis between February and April 2015.

Each writer will be paid a licensing fee of $500 for the use of her script in the fall 2015 production. Writers retain rights to their material.

If you are interested in participating, please email the following items, with the subject line “Title IX Proposal”, to [email protected] by September 30, 2014:

  • A playwriting resume
  • A short statement (200 words max) describing the female athlete you would like to write about and why you chose her
  • A 15-page playwriting sample. This can be either a complete short play or an excerpt from a longer work. In selecting your sample, keep in mind that we are looking for writers who can create work that is vivid, engaging and playable, with minimum technical requirements.
